Understanding the Science of Hora Shastra and Its Applications

What Is Hora Shastra?

Hora Shastra is the science of unlocking answers locked within time. Also known as Prashna Shastra or Horary Astrology, it is an excellent tool for selecting Muhurats auspicious timings to begin important activities. The word Hora means Hour.

Each hour of the 24-hour day is governed by a specific planet for approximately 60 minutes. Using this measure of time, you can determine the most auspicious moment to begin activities that align with specific planetary energies helping you do the right thing at the right time.

Hora Shastra can also be applied to make predictions through a concept called the Prashna Kundli a question-based chart. Unlike a birth chart, this chart is cast at the exact moment a question is asked and is designed specifically to answer that question.

Origin of Hora Shastra

The primary text on Hora Shastra is the Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra, written by Maharishi Parashara. It covers the workings of each planetary hour and how every hour can be utilized for different purposes for example, using the Mars Hora to buy property or the Mercury Hora to sign contracts.

The book is structured as an extensive dialogue between Sage Parashara and his disciple Maitreya, covering 144 Bhava Yogas, planetary conditions, divisional charts (Vargas), and dasha systems for predictive accuracy. Maharishi Parashara is widely regarded as the father of Jyotish Shastra.
